A heat pump (hybrid) water heater is expected to last 10 to 15 years. ENERGY STAR bases its savings math on 13 years.
A heat pump water heater is a standard glass-lined tank with a small refrigeration unit on top that pulls heat out of the surrounding air. The tank half ages like any tank: anode rod, sediment, eventual rust. The compressor half ages like a refrigerator or an air-source heat pump, which is to say it usually outlasts the tank.
Because the technology has only been common since around 2010, long-run data is thinner than for ordinary tanks. The ranges published by utilities and ENERGY STAR cluster around 10 to 15 years, in line with the tank underneath.
Two maintenance items matter more than on a plain tank: the air filter on the heat pump, which clogs and makes the unit fall back to its electric elements, and the condensate drain, which can block and shut the unit down.
